Maryland man identified as snorkeler who perished
A 66-year-old visitor from Maryland died Tuesday while snorkeling in the waters fronting the Hawaiian Electric Kahe power plant in Nanakuli.
The Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Robert Dernetz of Towson, Md.
Emergency Medical Services said the incident occurred at 10:31 a.m. at Kahe Point Beach Park, and the victim was taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Pearl City fisherman drowned, Medical Examiner’s Office says
A 60-year-old Pearl City man drowned while fishing Sunday on the Pearl City Peninsula, the Honolulu Medical Examiner’s Office said.
The victim was identified as Gerald Wond of Pearl City. His death was classified as accidental.
Honolulu firefighters were called to Pearl City Peninsula after receiving a report of a body floating about 20 feet from shore. Witnesses had seen Wond fishing from shore earlier in the day.
Kailua-Kona robbery suspect will make court appearance
A 30-year-old Kailua-Kona man is scheduled to appear in court today on charges stemming from a robbery Sept. 11 at a restaurant.
Klay Brian Bensch of Kailua-Kona was charged with firstdegree robbery, first-degree burglary, kidnapping, second-degree assault and second-degree theft. His bail was set at $29,000.
At about 10:30 p.m. Sept. 11, after the restaurant had closed, a man entered the premises near Palani Road and Kuakini Highway, approached a female employee from behind, threatened her with a weapon, forced her into another room and grabbed an undisclosed amount of cash. He fled on foot.
