No rest for Kamehameha after big tourney finish
There will be no breathers for the globe-trotting Kamehameha Warriors.
Coming off a second-place finish at the 64-team Durango Classic over the weekend, Kamehameha, ranked No. 1 in the Star-Advertiser Girls Volleyball Top 10, enters the inferno of ILH volleyball with a showdown at No. 2 Punahou tonight.
The Warriors went 6-1 at the Durango, upsetting two of the top five teams in the nation. They ousted No. 5 Archbishop Mitty (Calif.) 25-11, 22-25, 25-23 and No. 3 Horizon (Ariz.) 31-29, 25-22. In the final, Kamehameha fell to Torrey Pines (Calif.), nearly pulling off the win after holding a 23-22 lead in the third and final set. Torrey Pines featured a front line of players who are 6-foot-4, 6-4 and 6-3.
“One or two swings and it could’ve gone either way. We had a swing for the match,” Kamehameha coach Chris Blake said, adding that the last Warriors team to reach the final was in 1999.
“Our girls played with heart. It doesn’t matter to them who’s on the other side,” Blake said.
Setter Alohi Robins-Hardy, libero Mia Heirakuji, outside hitter Tiyana Hallums and opposite Sarah Lau were selected to the all-tournament team.
“We have really strong leadership,” Blake said of co-captains Faith Maafala, Robins-Hardy and Hallums. “Of course, we’re disappointed, but we played well, and we’re still hungry. We did a lot of great things up there. I’m proud of their mind-sets. They’re very mature.”
After a flight delay, the team returned to Honolulu at 10 p.m. Sunday. The match tonight at Punahou will be televised on OC 16 at 7 p.m. Midway through first-round play, Kamehameha leads the league with a 6-0 mark. Punahou is 6-1, its only defeat coming at Kamehameha two weeks ago.
Kamehameha-Maui suspends football coach
Kamehameha-Maui football coach Cody Nakamura has been suspended for one game by the school.
The Maui News reported that Nakamura, a first-year head coach, was suspended for a sideline incident during a game against Maui. A video on the Maui News YouTube page shows a Maui kick returner running out of bounds toward an area behind Nakamura.
The coach braced himself and lifted a forearm, clipping the runner. The Maui player hit the ground.
