Children and youth day
Celebrate special month at state Capitol
For the 20th year, Children and Youth Day takes over the grounds of the state Capitol from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6.
More than 300 exhibitors and community groups will offer free interactive, educational and fun activities for the family under the "Big Top" tents. There will also be dozens of rides, bouncers and games, entertainment, guided tours, demonstrations and food and drink vendors.
Besides a BrushBot (toothbrush and motor robotics) workshop, there will be a keiki fitness obstacle course and free admission to Iolani Palace. Teens can participate in an aerosol art contest or dance to K-pop music.
The event honors the special contributions of Hawaii’s keiki to our communities during October, which is Children & Youth Month.
Free parking is available at surrounding state and city public parking lots, Central Middle School and the Alapai Transit Center. Call 586-6130 or visit hawaiicyd.org for more information. — Nina Wu, Star-Advertiser
Xtreme fun zone
Rides, activities prep families for UH football
UH pregame activities are about to get more Xtreme.
Xtreme Fun Rentals is the new title sponsor of the free family zone that is held before University of Hawaii football games at Aloha Stadium.
The Xtreme Fun Zone, in the parking lot across from the ticket office, will feature a keiki ride, face painting, a sports jumper, a football-throwing cage and the 24-foot Xtreme Rock Climbing Wall.
The family zone will open up four hours before kickoff for all five remaining Rainbow Warriors home games, the first of which is today when UH hosts Fresno State. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
Xtreme Fun, which has provided entertainment at UH games for more than 10 years, took over title sponsorship of the family zone after Chevron dropped out. Owner Delbert Kim said the area is for kids to have a little pregame fun.
"We’re trying to attract families to the game," Kim said. "This is a really good thing for UH, for the fans. It’s something they can do while they tailgate."
Kim said the featured carnival ride might change from game to game. For this weekend, keiki can enjoy the Turbo Tubs, a spinning, stomach-twisting ride. — Stefanie Nakasone, Star-Advertiser
