Malcolm Chun stands under the canopy of native plants in the garden of his home in Waialae. Chun, an author of more than 20 books on native Hawaiian subjects and plants, has been cultivating and caring for many endangered native plant species since the mid-1970s. Malcolm Chun tends to young kalo in a pot in his garden. Chun has about 10 different varieties of kalo. Growing and preserving native plants are important to Chun. "If we lose any of these," he said, "we lose a heritage and we're not getting it back."
