Main break cuts water from 600 homes
About 600 homes in the Moanalua Valley area were without water Thursday night after a contractor broke into a 16-inch main near the Moanalua Golf Club.
Honolulu Board of Water Supply crews were working to create a bypass to restore service, at lower than normal pressure, to customers. A water wagon was stationed at Ala Aolani Street and Ala Hekili Place to provide water.
Additionally, customers can call the board at 748-5000 and press 1 on the menu to request a water wagon that will be roving in the area.
Service to Kaiser Permanente Moanalua Medical Center and Clinic was restored at about 3 p.m., two hours after the main break, said board spokesman Dymian Racoma.
The break was reported by a contractor doing excavating at about 1 p.m., Racoma said.
"We immediately went to the hospital to start doing a bypass to get the water service back on," Racoma said.
CORRECTION: A 16-inch water main break Thursday was located on property next to the Moanalua Golf Club. An earlier version of this story and a Page B2 "Newswatch" item Friday said the break was on the golf club’s property.
Bridge work to close Kalanianaole lanes
Oahu drivers will encounter closed lanes on Kalanianaole Highway between Hanauma Bay and Sandy Beach through the rest of the year for bridge repairs, according to state transportation officials.
Drivers are encouraged to use Kealahou Street and Lunalilo Home Road as a detour, should anticipate delays and drive carefully through the area, Department of Transportation officials said.
Lanes will be closed next week with construction on the stretch 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and traffic will be contra-flowed, officials said.
The road will be closed entirely from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday from Koko Head shooting range to the Halona blowhole lookout, the department said.
The $2.4 million project aims to fix and strengthen barriers and repair the road on Ihiihilauakea Bridge, officials said.
