HPU volleyball suffers first PacWest loss
Despite 16 kills from Samantha Rummans, Hawaii Pacific fell to Academy of Art in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match Thursday in San Francisco.
The scores were 25-19, 27-29, 21-25, 25-21, 15-9
HPU (11-3, 5-1) also got 11 kills apiece from Kasey Thompson and Pomai Recca. HPU setters Marie Fujii (21 assists, 12 digs) and Hannah Schuett (23, 11) posted double-doubles, while Chelsey Buyuan added a game-high 28 digs. Melissa Brum had 23 kills for the Urban Knights (6-8, 2-4).
BYUH men earn first PacWest soccer win
Brigham Young-Hawaii scored two first-half goals and held on to beat Dixie State 2-1 for its first Pacific West Conference victory Thursday in St. George, Utah.
Colby Bauer scored in the first five minutes and Cam Neeley added a goal near the end of the half for BYUH (3-3-2, 1-2-1). Dixie State, which got a late goal off a free kick, is 2-5-2, 1-4-1.
» BYUH’s women scored successive goals in a six-minute span late in the game to earn a 2-2 draw at Dixie State. Sarah Bodily scored in the 78th minute and Brittney Crump in the 84th to force extra time. But after two overtimes, the Seasiders (1-4-2, 0-3-1) and Dixie State (4-3-2, 4-1-1) played to a tie.
» Hawaii Pacific gave up an own goal in overtime to fall 2-1 to California Baptist in a men’s soccer match in Riverside, Calif. Jimmy Baggett scored early in the second half for HPU (4-3-1, 2-1), but the Lancers (4-3-1, 4-2) tied it four minutes later.
» California Baptist (6-4, 5-1) scored three goals in the first 18 minutes for a 3-0 victory over HPU (2-6, 0-3) in a women’s soccer match.
» Chaminade’s men’s soccer team fell to Point Loma 4-1 in San Diego. Matt Davies scored in the 78th minute for the Silverswords (0-7, 0-3). Point Loma is 5-3-2, 3-0-2.
» Chaminade (0-7, 0-3) lost 4-0 to Point Loma (5-3-1, 4-0-1) in a women’s match.
» Azusa Pacific defeated Hawaii Hilo 4-0 in women’s soccer at Azusa, Calif. The Cougars are 6-1-1, 4-0-1 in the PacWest and UHH is 4-3-1, 1-3.
Fujikawa misses cut
Tadd Fujikawa of Honolulu shot a 5-over 76 Thursday and missed the cut of the eGolf Tour’s River Landing Open in Salisbury, N.C. He finished the two rounds at 7-over 149.
