1. Two QBs
» Situation: San Jose State 3, Hawaii 0, 13:34 remaining, first quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at own 21
» The Play: QBs Ikaika Woolsey and Sean Schroeder are on the field for Hawaii’s first offensive play, Woolsey behind center and Schroeder as a wide receiver. Woolsey keeps the ball on the first play for no gain.
» Impact: Schroeder moves to quarterback on the next play and stays there most of the game. Woolsey rushes three times for 18 yards and completes one of three passes for 44 yards.
» Woolsey: "Coach just wanted to try a little wrinkle. Get as many of our playmakers on the field as we could."
2. Fales prevails
» Situation: Hawaii 14, San Jose State 10, 14:09 remaining, second quarter, San Jose State ball, second and 7 at own 25
» The Play: QB David Fales rolls to his right and finds WR Tyler Winston open for a 40-yard pass.
» Impact: On the next play, Fales passes to TE Billy Freeman for a 35-yard touchdown. San Jose State takes the lead, which it keeps the rest of the game.
» Fales: "We were doing the little things, doing the basics, basically just executing."
3. Four runs
» Situation: San Jose State 20, Hawaii 14, 2:26 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth and 1 at 50
» The Play: RB Steven Lakalaka takes a handoff up the middle and is stopped for a 1-yard loss.
» Impact: Hawaii turns the ball over on downs after four consecutive handoffs generate a total of 8 yards. Three plays later, San Jose State scores on a 39-yard run by Jarrod Lawson and Hawaii never gets within one score of the lead again.
» Hawaii coach Norm Chow: "We should’ve been able to run the ball better. We need to get our running game straight, we need to get people healthy, we need to run the ball against the coverages they were running tonight."
4. No catch
» Situation: San Jose State 27, Hawaii 14, 9:45 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball, third and 7 at San Jose State 9
» The Play: Schroeder’s pass into the end zone is deflected by CB Dasheon Frierson and into the hands of diving WR Chris Gant. But the pass is ruled incomplete, as it appears Gant is still juggling the ball while sliding out of bounds. The call is challenged by Hawaii but upheld after review.
» Impact: Instead of closing to within six points with a touchdown and conversion, Hawaii settles for a 27-yard field-goal try that Tyler Hadden promptly misses.
» Gant: "I thought it was a touchdown. Everybody else thought it was a touchdown."
5. That’s a wrap
» Situation: San Jose State 37, Hawaii 21, 14:42 remaining, fourth quarter, Hawaii ball, first and 10 at own 38
» The Play: Frierson intercepts Schroeder’s pass and San Jose State takes over at its own 28.
» Impact: This was one of four turnovers that hurt Hawaii.
» San Jose State coach Ron Caragher: "It was a great job tonight by the defense. They had three interceptions and a fumble recovery and I couldn’t be prouder of their effort. Winning the turnover battle was huge tonight because we’ve been missing that the last few weeks."
