Get specimens ID’d at minerals show
Want to know more about that weird-looking rock you found in your backyard or on your vacation? Find out at the 12th annual Rock and Mineral Show and Sale, set for Oct. 19 and 20 at the Outrigger Waikiki on the Beach Hotel.
As part of the free event, members of the Rock and Mineral Society of Hawaii will help identify fossils and mineral specimens brought to the show by the public — just one of the education opportunities at the show.
Display and sale items include Hawaiian minerals, amethyst, celestite, fluorescent minerals, quartz, gemstones, fine jewelry, fossils, lapidary minerals, opals, tourmalines and meteorites.
The event runs from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. both days in the hotel’s Leahi Room on the lobby level.
Life in 1800s Hawaii examined via letters
Author Fred Gregory will explain how letters reveal what life was like in the 19th century in his talk "Windows on History: Letters and stamps under the Kamehamehas" on Oct. 24.
Gregory will utilize old letters from whalers, missionaries, sandalwood traders and merchants, and share stories of Hawaiian kings, queens and kamaaina in the 1800s.
Other topics include how people communicated, the means for carrying letters and the development of formal postal systems.
The free talk, sponsored by the Hawaiian Historical Society, will start at 7 p.m. at the old archives building at Iolani Palace.
