UHH in second place at tournament
Led by three top-10 scores, the Hawaii Hilo women’s golf team was in second place heading into today’s final round of the Western Washington Invitational in Bellingham, Wash.
The Vulcans carded an aggregate 311 on the 6,094-yard, par-73 Bellingham Country Club, seven strokes behind the University of British Columbia.
UHH sophomore Jade Salvador (Hawaii Baptist) was fourth at 1-over 74, three strokes behind co-leaders Stephanie Wong of UBC and Jennifer Liedes of St. Martin’s.
Kristen Sawada (Mililani), who won last week’s St. Martin’s Invitational, and Kacie Harada (Maryknoll) shared ninth at 78. Rounding out the Vulcans’ scoring were Dayna Bersamin (Baldwin), who was tied for 29th at 81, and Erika Morihiro from Tokyo, who was tied for 42nd at 84.

BYU-Hawaii sinks Fresno Pacific
The fifth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s volleyball team downed No. 22 Fresno Pacific 25-15, 25-23, 14-25, 25-19 in a PacWest match Monday night in Fresno, Calif.
Shih Ting Chen had 18 kills and 11 digs to lead the Seasiders (12-1, 7-1 PacWest), who are 4-0 on the road trip, which ends with a match against Hawaii Hilo on Saturday. The Sunbirds fell to 9-6 and 4-4.
Dominican stops Chaminade in 4
The Chaminade women’s volleyball team fell to Dominican 25-26, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19 in San Rafael, Calif.
Kim Spring buried a match-high 16 kills for the Silverswords, who fell to 5-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play.
Chaminade finished its first mainland road trip of the season at 1-3 and will face Hawaii Pacific on Saturday.
Academy of Art downs Hawaii Hilo
Marley Strand-Nicolaisen’s 17 kills and 12 digs were not enough to boost Hawaii Hilo, as the Vulcans fell in four sets to Academy of Art in San Francisco, 25-19, 25-27, 25-14, 25-18.
Hawaii Hilo (5-8, 0-8) dropped all four of its road matches.
Seasiders move up to No. 5 in AVCA poll
Three impressive sweeps on the road had Brigham Young-Hawaii back at No. 5 in the AVCA Division II Coaches Top 25 poll announced Monday.
It was the same spot the Seasiders were in in the preseason poll and the first poll of the season. BYUH was No. 6 in last week’s rankings.
The top four teams remained unchanged, led by Concordia-St. Paul (15-1). Minnesota-Duluth (15-1) was No. 2, followed by Tampa (11-1) and Central Missouri (17-0).
BYUH’s Chen captures weekly award
Brigham Young-Hawaii junior hitter Shih Ting Chen was named the conference player of the week after helping the Seasiders to three sweeps on the road.
Chen had a combined 50 points on 46 kills, an ace, one solo block and four block assists. She led the conference in kills per set (5.11 kps) while hitting .376 with just eight error on 101 swings.
She also had a combined 31 digs in the straight-sets victories at Notre Dame de Namur, Holy Names and Dominican.
Men’s Soccer
BYUH goalkeeper Pineda cited
Brigham Young-Hawaii junior goalkeeper Chris Pineda was named the defender of the week after helping the Seasiders go 1-0-1 on the road last week.
He gave up one goal in two matches, that coming in a 2-1 win at Dixie State. He also stopped all seven shots on goal in a 0-0 double-overtime draw at Point Loma Nazarene.
