Yamashiro off to hot start
Manhattan College freshman Allie Yamashiro earned her third Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference libero of the week award on Tuesday.
The 2013 Kamehameha graduate averaged 3.90 digs per set in victories over Canisius and Niagara over the weekend to help the Jaspers move into first place in the conference.
Yamashiro totaled 39 digs, 11 assists and four aces in two five-set wins to help Manhattan beat both schools on the same road trip for the first time since 2002.
Yamashiro is currently fourth in the conference, averaging 4.44 digs per set.
UCLA’s Chan breaks tourney record
UCLA sophomore Lorens Chan, a 2012 ‘Iolani alumnus, broke a tournament record on Tuesday, shooting 30 on the back nine to finish in a tie for third place at the Erin Hills Intercollegiate.
Chan shot a 4-under 68 in the final round to jump 11 places up the leaderboard. He finished at 3 under after shooting the lowest back-nine score in tournament history.
He made birdies on Nos. 10, 11, 12 and 16 and drove the par-4 15th green before making eagle to shoot 6 under over the final nine holes.
