"Final Recipe": Mark (K-pop star Henry Lau) enters a prestigious culinary competition in Shanghai to help save his grandfather’s restaurant. He competes against talented chefs from around the Pacific Rim, showcasing his expert skills from years of observing his grandfather slave away in the kitchen. Meanwhile, Julia (Michelle Yeoh) hopes her husband, David (Chin Han), a former chef, enters the contest and rediscovers his love for cooking. Directed by Gina Kim. In English and Mandarin with English subtitles. U.S. premiere; 8:30 p.m. Dole Cannery Stadium 18.
"The Wind Rises": Supposedly animation master Hayao Miyazaki’s swan song, this film is inspired by two real-life characters: Jiro Horikoshi, visionary designer of the famed Zero fighter plane, and Tatsuo Hori, author of the novel bearing the film’s title. Jiro lives a simple, rural life. In his fantasy world, up on the highest clouds in the sky, he regularly meets with Caproni, an Italian aeronautical engineer who designs amazing flying machines. Jiro becomes an elite engineer who creates a state-of-the-art fighter bomber put into service just as Japan is contemplating war with the U.S. In Japanese with English subtitles. Hawaii premiere, 6 p.m., Dole Cannery Stadium 18.
