The Talk Story Festival is returning with two evenings of Halloween-worthy stories Oct. 18 and 19.
The festival, now in its 25th year, is relocating to the Ala Wai Golf Course Clubhouse ballroom this year after many years at the McCoy Pavilion at Ala Moana Beach Park, but the stories should be just as entertaining. Nine storytellers per night will get 20 minutes each to weave their tales, accompanied by dramatic lighting effects and video projections of the performances.
"Spooooky Stories" is the theme of the first night, while the second is billed as "Deep Tales." The free storytelling sessions, hosted by Jeff Gere, begin at 6 p.m. both nights.
The lineup includes Kathy Collins of Maui, well known for her incarnation of the pidgin-speaking Tita, who will offer a two-part story based on the Pele and Hiiaka epic over both nights; nationally recognized Ohio storyteller Lyn Ford, telling a twisted European tale Oct. 18; and botanist Pete Griffin, talking tall about Alaska wildlife Oct. 19.
Also appearing Oct. 18 are Karen Yamamoto-Hackler, Lopaka Kapanui, James McCarthy and Alice Anne Parker.
The Oct. 19 lineup includes Moses Goods, Yasu Ishida, Daniel A. KelināII, Shain Miller and Kilohana Silve.
A free storytelling workshop will be held 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 19 for budding storytellers.
The Talk Story Festival is sponsored by the Honolulu Department of Parks and Recreation. For more information, visit www1.honolulu.gov/parks/programs/ talkstory.
