Jang, Sakamoto advance to final stage
Hawaii’s Anna Jang and Nicole Sakamoto closed fast Friday, firing 4-under-par 68s in the final round of the LPGA Final Qualifying Tournament to advance to the final stage.
Jang, the 2007 state high school champ at Punahou, tied for 37th with a four-day total of 2-over 290. The medalist by six shots, at Venice, Fla., was Amy Anderson, at 272. Anderson won 20 collegiate titles at North Dakota State.
Sakamoto, who has dominated the state women’s championships the past three years, earned a share of 56th with a 292 total.
Former Rainbow Wahine Corie Hou, from Australia, made it on the number, closing at 73—294. She was part of an 11-way tie for 80th. The top 80 and ties move on to the Final Qualifying Tournament, Dec. 4-8 at LGPA International in Daytona Beach, Fla.
Top finishers in the final stage earn 2014 LPGA membership (total number of cards TBD), and all others who make the cut receive Symetra Tour status.
Maui’s Shayna Miyajima shot a final-round 71 but finished three shots back at 297. Hilo’s Britney Yada was at 70—301 and tied for 136th in the field of 195.
