Isle roots help new rear admiral shatter ceilings in Navy career

Rear Adm. Alma M. Grocki was officially promoted in a ceremony Oct. 4 aboard the USS Missouri Memorial. She serves as deputy chief of staff for fleet maintenance for the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Below, the Punahou School and 1981 U.S. Naval Academy graduate presented a lei to her mother, Dorothy Lau.

Rear Adm. Alma M. Grocki’s sons Nick, left, and Dan, a midshipman, secured new shoulder boards to her uniform at a ceremony Oct. 4 marking her promotion. The young men are continuing a family naval tradition: Dan is attending the Naval Academy, and Nick has applied. Grocki’s husband, Russ, is a retired submariner, and her father was a shipyard foreman.
