Microsoft to hold free talk on YouthSpark
The Microsoft Corp. will conduct a presentation for educators, business leaders and nonprofit officials Wednesday on the software giant’s YouthSpark initiative aimed at providing disadvantaged youths with the skills and tools necessary to compete for jobs in the high-tech 21st century.
The three-year program seeks to bridge what Microsoft defines as the "opportunity divide" between those who have skills and resources to be educated in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics and those who don’t.
A variety of initiatives are underway such as making the company’s software programs free to those agencies and programs that provide help to disadvantaged youths and that offer training and scholarships directly to students.
YouthSpark Connections Honolulu runs from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at ‘Iolani School. It is free to the public; a limited number of openings remain. For information: bit.ly/1cnkDfd.
Felon faces trial on charges of car theft
A 48-year-old felon arrested 21 years ago for taking a television cameraman hostage will be tried in December on theft charges.
Ulysses Kim on Oct. 7 entered a plea of not guilty to charges of first-degree car theft and first- and second-degree terroristic threatening.
His trial will begin the week of Dec. 9 in Circuit Court.
Kim is being held at the Oahu Community Correctional Center, unable to post $50,000 bail.
Police said Kim on Sept. 23 entered the car of a 58-year-old man in Waipahu and tried to steal it. The man confronted the suspect, who then tried to flee, but the man held onto him until police arrived.
In August 1992 Kim, armed with a sawed-off shotgun, was a parole violator being sought by police when he took KGMB-TV cameraman Peter O’Callaghan hostage. Kim was sentenced to prison for up to 20 years but was eligible for parole after 12 years.
