Hawaii’s Tadd Fujikawa opened with an even-par 70 on Tuesday in the Web.com Tour’s First Qualifying Stage at Florence Country Club in South Carolina.
Fujikawa had two birdies and two bogeys and is tied for 18th.
The top 34 and ties after Friday’s final round advance.
Chan Kim, who won the 2006 Hawaii state individual high school championship with Kaimuki before moving to Arizona, is playing in Dayton, Nev. He shot 78 — with triple-bogey on the 18th — and is tied for 59th. The top 32 and ties will advance from Dayton. Kim was medalist at the Asian Tour qualifying event earlier this year.
The top qualifiers from 12First Stage events advance to one of six Second Stage tournaments next month. Final Qualifying is Dec. 12-17. This year, for the first time, golfers are attempting to qualify for the Web.com tour, which is now the pathway to the PGA Tour.
Fujikawa has been playing on the eGolf Tour the past few years, winning the tour championship his first season (2010). Earlier this year, the tour announced it had formed a new eGolf Pro Tour West. It plans to have 20 events annually, from September through May, in Arizona, California and Nevada.
