‘Iolani did enough to pull away from St. Francis and advance in the ILH Division II playoffs on Saturday.
But Raiders coach Wendell Look walked through Aloha Stadium’s north tunnel less than satisfied with their overall performance following a 47-18 win over the Saints.
‘Iolani quarterback Austin Jim On threw for 245 yards and six touchdowns, three going to Tyler Teruya and two more to Keoni-Kordell Makekau, and the Raiders scored 20 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to thwart the Saints’ upset bid and move on to Friday’s ILH D-II final to face Damien.
"We didn’t play very well," Look said. "(The Saints) did a great job of preparing their kids and they totally outhustled us and played a lot harder and played a lot smarter than us. … We didn’t get our team ready to play this game.
"Hopefully we get some of our guys back, but again I need to do a better job of getting these guys ready."
After ‘Iolani went three and out on its first possession, Jim On finished four of the Raiders’ next five drives with touchdown passes, including a 71-yard strike to Makekau — who finished the game with 145 receiving yards — on the second play of the third quarter.
St. Francis scored the next 12 points powered by the all-purpose play of Ranan Mamiya. The junior extended a drive with a 35-yard run out of a punt formation on fourth and 24 and later finished it with a 24-yard run.
He then carried the ball five times on a nine-play drive capped by Maika Teal’s 10-yard touchdown pass to Blayne Won to cut ‘Iolani’s lead to 27-18 with 1:19 left in the third quarter.
But Jim On responded by going 4-for-4 on ‘Iolani’s next possession, and his touchdown pass to Teruya pushed the Raiders ahead 34-18 early in the fourth quarter.
A botched punt attempt gave ‘Iolani the ball back on the St. Francis 5 and Teruya’s third score put the game out of reach.
"We came off a bye, so we wanted to knock the rust off and wanted to work hard this week. We started off slow, but we got it together," said Jim On, who completed 19 of 28 pass attempts.
"I know we were shooting ourselves in the foot a little bit so we had to pick it up. But (St. Francis) put up a good fight."
Mamiya ended the game with 153 yards on 21 carries. He caught five passes for 47 yards and completed three passes for 21 yards as the Saints finished their first season of varsity football at 1-8.
"It shows they can compete," St. Francis coach Mike Ulufale said. "They gave me everything they have. We did just what we wanted to — take the game into the fourth quarter. … I’m really proud of my boys.

Syles Choy scored on a quarterback sneak with 50 seconds left and the Monarchs held off a final charge by the Wolfpack to earn a spot in the postseason final against ‘Iolani.
Choy passed for 175 yards, including a 68-yard completion to Leeland Lauti on Damien’s final drive. Choy scrambled and found Lauti over the middle. Lauti then broke out of a tackle and bolted for the end zone before being knocked out at the Pac-Five 2.
After Choy’s touchdown, Pac-Five’s Roycen Routt returned the kickoff 68 yards to the Damien 22. The Wolfpack moved to the Monarchs 11, but a last-second throw came up empty, ending Pac-Five’s season at 1-8.
Pac-Five quarterback Anthony Canencia passed for a season-high 356 yards and three touchdowns, with Routt catching 12 passes for 197 yards and touchdowns covering 40 and 65 yards.
Lauti led Damien with 93 yards rushing.
