Elms and Hwang see Okafor win award
Texas Tech’s Ifeatu Okafor won the NCAA Woman of the Year award on Sunday in a ceremony in Indianapolis.
Former University of Hawaii softball standout Kelly (Majam) Elms attended the event as one of nine finalists (three from each division) for the award recognizing accomplishments in academics, athletics, community service and leadership. Elms is the first UH student-athlete to be named a finalist for the award.
Former BYU-Hawaii tennis player I-Hsuan (Annie) Hwang also attended the ceremony as part of the top 30 from an initial pool of more than 450 nominees.
Okafor was a two-time All-Big 12 selection as a thrower for the Red Raiders’ track and field team while earning academic all-conference honors four times and volunteering with various community events.
Hawaii sailing team wins regatta
The University of Hawaii coed sailing team defeated 26 teams en route to capturing the Stoney Burke Intersectional Regatta for the fifth straight time Sunday in San Francisco. With a mixture of coed and women’s squads in the regatta, the UH coed team scored 101 points, seven ahead of second-place UC Santa Barbara. The Rainbow Wahine team finished 15th.
