No injuries in emergency landing on Maui
A Moklele Express plane with 10 people on board made an emergency landing on Piilani Highway in Kihei Monday evening.
This incident occurred just after 7 p.m., about 50 yards south of Piilani Highway and Kilohana Drive intersection.
According to a Maui Fire Department report, the plane experienced engine trouble and landed on the highway. The 10 people on board — two pilots and eight passengers — were uninjured.
The plane is a Cessna 208B Grand Caravan operated by Mokulele Express.
Police closed Piilani Highway between Kilohana and Wailea Ike Drive until the scene could be cleared.
The state Department of Transportation was on scene investigating the incident, fire officials said.
Enrollment slips by 3% for fall, UH-Hilo reports
HILO » After years of steady increases, student enrollment at the University of Hawaii at Hilo has fallen.
The Hawaii Tribune-Herald reports enrollment dropped by 3 percent this fall. It had increased annually for a decade.
Chancellor Donald Straney says the school retained higher numbers for incoming freshmen but did not keep students at higher levels.
Straney says a recovering economy may be the reason. He says more jobs have been available and that students are entering the workforce.
The university enrolled 4,034 students this fall, a decrease of 3.3 percent.
Oahu public high schools hold safety drills
Safety drills for dealing with emergencies are being conducted this week at public high schools on Oahu.
The state Department of Education said in a press release Monday afternoon it was working with the Honolulu Police Department to hold drills at several high schools.
"While these drills were planned for some time, we recognize that the tragedy that took place at a Nevada school this morning reinforces the need for continued diligence in ensuring our schools are prepared for emergency situations," Superintendent Kathryn Matayoshi said. "We extend heartfelt sympathies to the school community in Nevada and the families who have lost their loved ones."
The DOE said it also conducts annual training for all security personnel.
"We appreciate the partnership with HPD and thank our school communities for their understanding of upcoming emergency drills at our schools," Matayoshi said.
In Sparks, Nev., a teacher at a middle school was shot and killed while trying to protect children after a student arrived on campus Monday and started opening fire before turning the weapon on himself, police said.
