Truck’s driver killed in crash near Ko Olina
A 62-year-old man driving a truck was killed in a crash Tuesday afternoon near the Ko Olina offramp from Farrington Highway, police said.
Police Lt. Robert Towne of the Vehicular Homicide Section said the driver was the sole occupant of the truck and was heading to Waianae with a truck full of cement tile. Towne said the truck drifted from the center lane to the right shoulder, where he hit a tree.
The crash happened at the offramp from the Waianae-bound lanes at about 4:10 p.m., according to an Emergency Medical Services report. The driver was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homeless man charged in alleged burglary
Prosecutors charged a 62-year-old homeless man Tuesday who allegedly burglarized a Kahala home Monday as a woman arrived home.
Alvin Umiamaka was charged with first-degree burglary. His bail was set at $50,000.
Police said the woman arrived home at 3:05 p.m. Monday to find a man inside her house.
The woman found her home had been broken into and items were stolen.
The man fled as the woman called police. Responding officers found Umiamaka nearby and arrested him on suspicion of first-degree burglary.
Man accused of abuse, assault of woman
Prosecutors charged a 21-year-old man with no local address Tuesday for allegedly choking a 25-year-old woman in Waimanalo on Sunday evening.
Jesse Kalima IV was charged Tuesday with two counts of second-degree assault and felony abuse. His bail was set at $60,000.
Police said Kalima allegedly held the woman against her will from 6:30 p.m. Sunday to 6:25 a.m. Monday and allegedly choked her.
Police found Kalima on Monday and arrested him without incident.
Escaped Waiawa inmate found at hospital
An inmate who escaped from Waiawa Correctional Facility on Saturday was found at a Honolulu hospital Tuesday.
Police learned Raphael Hernandez was at the Queen’s Medical Center.
Hernandez, 32, was arrested for second-degree escape at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday but remained at Queen’s on Tuesday night.
State sheriffs and police launched a search Saturday after the minimum-security inmate was reporting missing at 6 a.m. Saturday.
Hernandez was serving a five-year sentence for promotion of a dangerous drug.
8 fires on Maui believed to be intentionally set
Firefighters extinguished eight brush fires that appeared to be intentionally set in the Lahaina area early Tuesday morning.
The fires occurred within a period of about two hours, Maui Fire Chief Lee Mainaga said. There was no damage to property.
The first crew went to the Lahaina bypass and Keawe Street area shortly after 3:30 a.m. and extinguished three blazes, ranging from 50 by 200 feet to 150 by 150 feet.
Seven minutes after the first call, a fire was reported near Honoapiilani Highway. Then, at 4:19 a.m., three were spotted above Leialii Parkway.
And at 4:48 a.m. firefighters went to a fire above Wahikuli Road, about 50 feet from nearby homes.
All the fires were put out by 6:09 a.m. A fire inspector investigation is underway.
