The Hawaii women’s basketball team was picked to finish second behind Cal Poly in the Big West Conference preseason media poll released Wednesday.
Cal Poly, the defending BWC tournament champion, received 17 of 20 first-place votes, with the other three going to UH.
"It’s just great that they picked us second," said senior forward Kamilah Jackson, who was named to the six-player preseason all-conference team. "I definitely think that we’re going to do better than that."
UH went 17-14 overall last season and 13-5 in the Big West, tied for second place, in Laura Beeman’s first year as coach. It was the first time in a decade the Rainbow Wahine were invited to the WNIT.

"I think when you are picked two in a very athletic, very well-coached conference, after what we did last year, I take that with a lot of humility and a lot of respect for these coaches," Beeman said. "On the other hand it’s just a poll, just a number. And if we don’t play and we don’t stay healthy, we could just as easily be four, five as we could two. If we do what we’re supposed to do, we win the thing.
