10 isle execs graduate from banking school
Ten Hawaii banking executives recently graduated from the Pacific Coast Banking School after completing a three-year graduate-level educational program focusing on leadership, risk management and financial performance in the financial services industry.
Participants attend a two-week resident session each August on the University of Washington campus in Seattle and complete six written extension assignments and an original management thesis.
The Hawaii graduates who received certificates Aug. 30 at the Seattle campus are Tony K.F. Au, division manager, Central Pacific Bank; Irene A. Dlugopolsky, senior vice president and director of risk management, Central Pacific Bank; Jason H. Haruki, vice president, First Hawaiian Bank; Victoria M. Hasty, senior vice president, First Hawaiian Bank; Anna M. Hu, vice president, Bank of Hawaii: Jeffrey K. Inouye, assistant vice president, First Hawaiian Bank; Keith K. Masuda, vice president and senior business banking team manager, Central Pacific Bank; Joy P. McLaughlin, senior vice president and division manager, First Hawaiian Bank; Janice K. Nakamoto, vice president of technology, Hawaii State Federal Credit Union; and Ann C. Teranishi, senior vice president, American Savings Bank.
This year’s graduating class consisted of 204 individuals representing a diverse mix of financial institutions from 27 states and one U.S. territory.
Thirty high-achievers were named to the honor roll, including two Hawaii graduates, Dlugopolsky and Hu. Both women also had their management reports selected for honors — Hu’s for the PCBS Lending Library and Dlugopolsky’s for a Citation, which is awarded when the confidential nature of the paper precludes it from being in the Lending Library.
Top shareholder increases stake in Hawaiian
Hirzel Capital Management LLC, the largest shareholder of Hawaiian Airlines’ parent company, has purchased an additional 29,800 shares of Hawaiian Holdings Inc.’s stock, according to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing on Friday.
Zac Hirzel, 36, president of Hirzel Capital, has been seeking a seat on Hawaiian’s board of directors since becoming the company’s largest shareholder earlier this year.
Hirzel Capital bought $220,520 worth of shares Wednesday at $7.40 each. Hirzel Capital now owns 5.66 million shares, or 10.8 percent of the company’s 52.39 million outstanding shares.
Hawaiian’s stock closed Friday up 2 cents at $7.89 on the Nasdaq stock market.
Honolulu ranks fifth for electric vehicle use
An electric vehicle charging company ranked Honolulu fifth highest on its list of the top 10 metropolitan areas for electric vehicles.
California-based ChargePoint based the rankings on the number of EVs and ChargePoint stations in each metro areas on a per capita basis.
The top five cities in order are San Francisco; Seattle; San Diego; Austin, Texas; and Honolulu.
State orders woman to halt financial service
The Hawaii securities commissioner has issued a preliminary cease-and-desist order against a "self-described" mortgage broker who allegedly used an investor’s funds to pay for personal expenses.
The order alleges that Nani Laura Kiyabu solicited a Hawaii resident in 2007 to invest with Kiyabu’s "friend" in an offshore investment. Kiyabu guaranteed the resident that the investment would double in value within a year, according to a news release from the state Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs. The order alleges Kiyabu used the investor’s money on personal expenses and that there was actually no friend and no offshore investment.
The order also alleges that Kiyabu sold the investments without being properly registered with the Office of the Commissioner of Securities. The order seeks penalties of $25,000 in addition to a permanent injunction against transacting securities in the state, rescission, and restitution for investors.
JPMorgan to pay $5.1B in Fannie, Freddie deal
WASHINGTON » JPMorgan Chase has agreed to pay $5.1 billion to resolve claims that it misled Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac about risky home loans and mortgage securities it sold them before the housing market collapsed.
The Federal Housing Finance Agency, which oversees Fannie and Freddie, announced the settlement Friday with JPMorgan, the largest U.S. bank. A broader deal with the Justice Department is still being negotiated.
JPMorgan sold $33 billion in mortgage securities to Fannie and Freddie between 2005 and 2007, according to the agency.
United Air fined $1.1M for tarmac delays
CHICAGO >> United Airlines will pay more than $1 million in fines for stranding passengers on 13 planes for more than three hours on the tarmac during a stormy day last year at Chicago’s O’Hare International Airport, federal officials said Friday. The $1.1 million fine is the largest levied against an airline since 2010, when new rules took effect that bar airlines from stranding passengers on the tarmac for longer than three hours without giving them the opportunity to leave the plane, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Toilets weren’t working on two of those planes. The airline exceeded the three-hour limit by as much as one hour, 17 minutes.
