ACADEMY CELEBRATES ALUMNAE: Suzanne Dods Chong Kee (class of ’62), left, Dr. Momi Ka‘anoi (’87), Rita Makini Gora (’46), Elizabeth Chong Ho (’57) and Karen Ruth Dick-Kung (’83) were the honorees at Sacred Hearts Academy’s 2013 Scholarship Fund Gala Oct. 18 at the Sheraton Waikiki. Gora said she hadn’t planned on going to the Catholic school but her father decided for her. (“He was very strict.”) Her ohana performed an oli mahalo (chant of thanks) after she received her honor.

KALANI CLASS OF ’73 REMEMBERS: Former teacher Joyce Wiese was one of the honored guests at the Kalani High School class of ’73’s “Reunion 40” party Oct. 19 at Mandalay Restaurant. Peter C.K. Fong, today a successful attorney, said he was a shy kid and a “lost soul” at Kalani until he took her psychology class. Other class notables include slack-key master George Kuo, New York neurosurgeon Kathryn Ko, University of Hawaii-Hilo volleyball star Nalani Spencer and the late Mackey Feary.

MARCH OF DIMES DRIVE BEGINS: The late U.S. Sen. Dan Inouye was represented by his widow, Irene Hirano Inouye, left, and son, Ken Inouye, at the March of Dimes’ “Roosevelt Legacy Celebration” campaign launch party honoring Inouye and philanthropist John Henry Felix Oct. 15 at Aqua Lotus Honolulu. Felix told the audience, including March of Dimes President Jennifer L. Howse, that his first donation to the March of Dimes was “one hard-earned dime” in 1938. He’s pledging $1 million to the 75th anniversary fund drive.
