Taste of Waipahu in its eighth year
Head for the iconic smokestack of the landmark Oahu Sugar Mill to find the eighth annual Taste of Waipahu on Saturday, where the best of the town’s food establishments will be spotlighted.
The event at Waipahu Festival Marketplace and along Waipahu Depot Road runs 4 to 10 p.m. Bring nonperishable food items for Waipahu-area food pantries in order to be entered in a drawing for a trip to Las Vegas.

Wine benefit aids women’s network
Support professional women while enjoying fine wine at a benefit event Nov. 7 at Harbor View Center at Pier 38.
The Professional Women’s Network fundraiser will feature various wines paired with food provided by Nico’s. Proceeds will fund scholarships to members who are furthering their education.

Lecture focuses on food labels
Find out what it takes for food to be labeled "organic" or "non-GMO" at a free lecture Saturday at MOA Wellness Center.
Hector Valenzuela, crop specialist with the University of Hawaii’s College of Tropical Agriculture and Human Resources, and Melissa Yee, doctor of Oriental medicine, will discuss the labels.
The talk starts at 10:30 a.m. The center is at 600 Queen St. Call 952-6900.
Filipino cooks sought for contest
Are you renowned for your pancit? Does your adobo take center stage on the buffet table? If so, consider entering "Kampeon sa Kusina: A Filipino Culinary Showdown," an amateur cooking competition organized by the Philippine Consulate General in Honolulu.
Ten finalists will be selected to compete Nov. 30 at the consulate.
To enter, you must be Filipino, at least 18 years of age and a Hawaii resident. Get an information packet and entry forms at philippineshonolulu.org, at the Kampeon sa Kusina Facebook page or via email at kampeonsakusina@gmail.com. Deadline for entries is Nov. 9.
Youths encouraged to submit recipes
Young chefs with healthfulness on their minds — and on their plates — could win an award and a party for their class, and have their dish featured on a restaurant menu in a snack contest presented by Hyatt Regency Waikiki Beach Resort and Spa, and Hawaii 5210.
Hyatt executive chef Sven Ullrich is calling on students in three grade categories — K-5, 6-8 and 9-12 — to enter recipes of favorite snacks. Deadline is Nov. 22.
