Dvorak cruises to singles title
Hawaii’s Sarah Dvorak did not drop a set on the way to winning the Girls Singles title at the USTA 18s Regional on Monday at Patsy T. Mink CORP Tennis Complex. Dvorak, from Kurtistown, defeated three-time Hawaii state high school champion Alyssa Tobita 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) in the final. They were seeded 1-2. Fourth-seeded Lani Rae Green, from Kekaha, lost to California’s Paige Cline 6-3, 6-2 in the third-place match. Dvorak also reached the doubles final with Katie Kim, but fell to Amber Park and Cline 8-6 in a pro set. Dvorak claimed the Girls Sportsmanship Award. Ninan Kumar, from Florida, took the boys’ award. Kawika Lam and Zander Kim, who won the 2012 Hawaii state high school doubles championship, reached the final before losing to Kumar and Chase Masciorini 8-3. Masciorini, the sixth seed from California, won singles 7-5, 6-4 over third-seeded Justin Thompson, from California. Kaneohe’s Jeffrey Liang, who was the top seed, took fourth.
Hilo men best on home course
Led by medalist Chris Shimomura and runner-up Corey Kozuma, Hawaii Hilo won its Dennis Rose Invitational on Tuesday at Waikoloa Kings’. The Vulcans shot a 54-hole total of 860 to beat Cal State Stanislaus by 25. Shimomura, a senior out of Lahainaluna, shot 67-70-72 to finish two ahead of Kozuma (73), another senior. Dalen Yamauchi (78—219) tied for third. Chaminade (309—920) finished seventh in the 10-team event, led by David Kirk’s 19th-place finish. Brigham Young-Hawaii (323—943) was eighth and Hawaii Pacific last. The Sea Warriors had just three golfers in the final round, so they could not post a team score. Chico State won the women’s title with a 311—925 total, 10 shots better than Hilo (315—935) and Cal State-East Bay (311—935). The Vulcans were paced by Dayna Bersamin (77—232) and Kristen Sawada (79—233), who finished ninth and 10th.
Hawaii Pacific (370—1,084) was eighth out of nine teams. Nova Southeastern’s Daniela Ortiz opened with a 70 and was the medalist at 77—221.
Rainbow Wahine in good shape at Leilehua
Hawaii is in second place, five shots out of the lead, after Tuesday’s opening round of the Rainbow Wahine Invitational at Leilehua Golf Course.The Wahine opened with a team total of 304, led by freshman Raquel Ek, who shot 2-over-par 74 and is one off the individual lead. Sacramento State leads the eight teams at 11-over 299. Colorado State and New Mexico State are a shot behind Hawaii. Izzy Leung, another UH freshman, and sophomore Nichole Cruz shot 76 and are in a six-way tie for 12th. UH freshmen Daezsa Tomas and Brianne Becker, both competing as individuals, also shot 76. The second round is today, with the final round Thursday.
