Kan honored for No. 7 Mizzou
Missouri’s magical 2013 volleyball season continued last week with two more wins to improve to a staggering 25-0 this season.
Freshman Carly Kan (Punahou ’13) was named the SEC player of the week on Monday after averaging 5.14 kills per set in wins on the road at Texas A&M and LSU.
Kan set a career high with 24 kills and added 17 digs and four blocks in a four-set win over the Tigers on Friday.
She became the first SEC player to total 26 points in a conference match this season and hit .400 overall.
She finished with 12 kills and eight digs in sweep of the Aggies, allowing Missouri to jump to No. 7 in this week’s AVCA Top 25, matching the highest ranking in school history.
Holtz gets consecutive game-winners
Pepperdine junior Ally Holtz tallied game-winning goals in consecutive matches to earn her first West Coast Conference soccer player of the week award on Monday.
Holtz, a 2011 Punahou alumna, finished with three goals and an assist in wins over Pacific and Saint Mary’s (Calif.) last week.
Holtz scored the game-winner in the 86th minute to give the Waves a 2-1 victory over the Tigers on Friday.
Sunday against the Gaels, Holtz assisted on Pepperdine’s first goal and then scored the next two in a 3-1 victory.
Holtz now leads the team with four assists and is second on the Waves with five goals and 14 points.
Pepperdine (9-5-2, 4-2) next plays at San Francisco on Friday.
Stollar comes up big
Drexel sophomore Lauren Stollar doubled her previous season total in goals scored over the weekend to earn Colonial Athletic Association co-player of the week honors on Monday in women’s soccer.
The 2012 Punahou alumna had scored only once in 16 games this season before finding the back of the net in wins over North Carolina-Wilmington on Friday and College of Charleston on Sunday.
Stollar scored the only goal of the game in the 83rd minute on Friday and netted Drexel’s first goal in a 4-1 win over College of Charleston.
The Dragons won back-to-back road games to finish the regular season at
7-10-1 overall and 3-5 in conference play.
Pa‘akaula has monster week
Towson (Md.) University sophomore Haley Pa‘akaula (Kamehameha ’12) earned her first CAA volleyball co-offensive player of the week honor on Monday.
Pa’akaula had 39 kills and hit .410 to lead the Tigers to a 2-1 record last week.
She had a team-high 11 kills and hit .304 with three digs and a block in a three-set sweep of Navy to snap a six-match losing streak.
She hit .448 with a career-high 16 kills in a loss to William & Mary on Friday and led the Tigers to their first league win with a team-high 12 kills and no errors against James Madison on Saturday. She also tied a career high in the match with seven digs and assisted on two blocks.
Pa‘akaula is currently third on the team with 189 kills this season.
Unga’s big game leads Cougars by Broncos
Brigham Young linebacker Uani Unga, a 2006 Kahuku alumnus, was named the FBS Independent player of the week for defense on Monday.
Unga, who also goes by the name Devin, recorded a team-high 15 tackles in a 37-20 win over Boise State last Friday. It was the fifth game this season of at least 10 tackles for Unga, who also broke up a pass and forced a fumble.
Unga originally played for Oregon State out of high school before transferring to BYU. He is currently ranked No. 15 among all FBS players, averaging 10.4 tackles per game.
