With flair, Shane Sox it to ’em
So when’s the parade? Shane Victorino certainly deserves one, after catapulting the Boston Red Sox to baseball’s greatest stage with a grand slam to win the American League, then clinching the World Series at home with four RBIs in the decisive Game 6. Not bad for a guy with a bad back.
As Red Sox Manager John Farrell said later, Victorino "has got a little bit of flair for the dramatic. The hits that he did record in the postseason couldn’t have been bigger and couldn’t have come at a more opportune time."
Equally effective on defense, Victorino picked up his fourth Gold Glove award this week, ranked the best right-fielder in the American League.
Here’s hoping that Victorino, who grew up on Maui, will soon be home to celebrate. Local fans are sure to turn out.
Chick, chick here, chick, chick there
We don’t know much about the business — or the details about the city’s last feral-chicken-control contract — but the latest installment in the city’s animal-control saga gives us pause.
Apparently $80,000 was set aside for the contractor. The low bid, at $59,000, came from the current contractor, who reported bagging 232 chickens over the past year. The city ultimately has decided not to award the contract, citing fiscal problems and asserting that chicken control is not a core service.
People who’ve been kept awake by a rooster might beg to differ. At any rate, that seems like an awful lot of money for that number of chickens. It might be cheaper if the city just paid a bounty per chicken caught. Hmm, a new cottage industry.
