Gymnasts chosen for Karolyi camp
Three Hawaii gymnasts were selected for the USA Gymnastics Talent Opportunity Program (TOPs) National B Team that will train next month under Bela and Marta Karolyi at the USAG Women’s National Training Center in Texas.
Selected were Hawaii Island Twisters Gymnastics members Ella Mulligan, 8; Kamryn Horiuchi, 8; and Kalyxta Gamiao, 10. The three, coached by Lori Yee and Joe Rapp, are among the 20 chosen out of original pool of some 3,000 in the 7-10 age group.
The trio advanced through a qualifying process that included the Oct. 11-13 TOPs Testing event at the national training center with 300 other hopefuls.
The camp is Dec. 8-12 in Huntsville, Texas.
Taylor, Flinta win ‘Double’ award
Kailua’s Kathryn Taylor and Martin Flinta of Sweden were the top amateurs in the Outrigger Hotels & Resorts “Double” award competition, given to the top male and female with the fastest combined time in last month’s XTERRA World and Ironman Hawaii championships.
Taylor finished in 10 hours, 50 minutes and 35 seconds at the Oct. 12 Ironman and 4:36:46 at XTERRA Oct. 27. Her combined time of 15:27:21 was 38:25 better than runner-up Beverly Watson of Canada.
Flinta’s combined time of 12:29:12 was 7:52 better than runner-up Pablo Ureta of Argentina.
Twelve men and four women completed the “double” including Kula’s Rudy Becker (16:38:54) and Eddie Johnson of Honolulu (17:05:20).
Taylor and Flinta won six-night stays at Outrigger properties on Maui.
The top finishers from Hawaii in last Sunday’s XTERRA were Eric Kollai of Kailua, 116th overall and 24th among males 35-39 (3:34:17), and Laurel Dudley from Waialua, fifth among females 30-34 (3:47:12).
Two amateurs from Hawaii won their respective divisions, including Honolulu’s Ed Fattoumey in the physically challenged division for the eighth time (3:52:13). Kamuela’s Wendy Minor, tied for the oldest female competitor, won her seventh division title, this time in 65-69
The XTERRA World Championship, held in Kapalua, Maui, is comprised of a 1-mile swim, 20-mile mountain bike and 10-kilometer trail run.
Last Sunday’s overall winner was Ruben Ruzafa of Spain (2:34:34), his second title in six years. The women’s title went to New Zealand’s Nicky Samuels, who finished in 2:57:48 in her race debut.
Junior windsurfers move on
Four windsurfers from Maui took advantage of their experience at Ho’okipa to qualify for this weekend’s youth-junior division finals of the JP Aloha Classic.
Advancing are Harley Stone, Fiona Wylde, Tom Juban and Casey Rehrer.
Honolulu’s Wiley Daniel, the youngest competitor at age 8, missed qualifying for the final by a point, tying Maui’s Ridge Lenny for fifth place. Daniel was named “Most Inspirational Competitor” by the competition organizers.
The JP Aloha Classis is part of the American Windsurfing Tour, a pro event running through Wednesday at Ho’okipa.
