Mainland states turn back hands of time

The U.S. mainland turned clocks back an hour early today, making the time difference between Hawaii and the West Coast two hours.

It’s five hours now between the East Coast and Hawaii.

The change officially occurred at 2 a.m.

Hawaii, most of Arizona and some U.S. territories do not observe daylight saving time.

Public safety officials say this is also a good time to put a new battery in the smoke alarm, no matter where you live.

Daylight saving time returns at 2 a.m. March 9.

Kamehameha opens new dormitories

There are new dormitories for middle school students boarding at Kamehameha Schools’ Kapalama campus.

School officials say students and staff will complete their move into the new dormitories this weekend.

The two buildings are three stories high and include communal bathrooms, conference rooms and study rooms.

Construction on the buildings started last year, the fifth major renovation project to be completed at the campus.

The private Kamehameha Schools enroll nearly 7,000 students of Native Hawaiian ancestry at campuses statewide.

Bomb threats target stores in Kahului

Maui police say bomb threats against two Kahului stores appear to be related and they are investigating the incidents as terroristic threatening cases.

In both cases, a caller threatened to set off a bomb unless the business put money onto a reloadable Visa debit card, police said.

In the first incident, a man called the Kmart in Kahului at about 10:24 a.m. Friday and told an employee that a bomb in the store would go off unless money was added to the debit card.

Another call was made at 10:55 a.m. to the Walgreens in Kahului. A male caller made a similar demand.

Both businesses evacuated customers and employees but no money was sent. A search of the stores turned up no suspicious items, police said.

Gunshot victim won’t cooperate with officers

Maui police are investigating a shooting, but said the victim is not cooperating.

Police responded to a report of a man with a gunshot wound on Old Mokulele Highway and South Kihei Road at 5:09 p.m. Friday.

Officers found the victim and confirmed he had been shot, but he was "uncooperative with police."

No weapon was found.

The victim was taken to Maui Community Medical Center with an injury that was not life-threatening, police said.
