Before introducing their sport in China, the Arena Football League all-stars wanted to put on a show in their stop-over in Hawaii.
In a tune-up for next week’s arena football debut in Beijing, the offenses in Saturday’s AFL China All-Star Arena Football Game did their part in combining for 130 points in the sport’s return to Blaisdell Arena.
Terrance Smith of the Jacksonville Sharks claimed game MVP honors after scoring three touchdowns, two on interception returns and another on a reception, in the East’s 67-63 win.
After the exhibition, the participants felt it was a positive first step as the tour continues on to China.
“It was fun. … It’s an all-star game and it’s really for the receivers and DBs to put on the show,” said Kamehameha graduate Brennen Carvalho, an All-Arena center with the Philadelphia Soul, who will make his first trip to China this week.
Quarterbacks and receivers accounted for 16 touchdown passes, with Smith stepping up for the defense by snagging both of the game’s interceptions.
Smith, a first-team All-Arena selection this season after coming down with 12 interceptions, gave the East a 20-7 lead in the second quarter with an interception return from midfield. He caught a touchdown pass in the third quarter and picked up his second pick-six in the fourth to open up a 60-49 lead.
Smith’s third score came 1 minute, 26 seconds after Larry Beavers returned a kickoff for a touchdown for the game’s 10th and final lead change.
“It was entertaining tonight for sure. The fans got to see a lot of different things that make our sport so special,” said East coach Clint Dolezel, who led the Soul to the last two ArenaBowls.
“They got to see kickoff returns, they got to see interceptions run back, they got to see some great touchdown catches, got to see some great (touchdown) dancing. That’s the unique thing about our game — it’s fun and it’s very fan friendly and I think the people saw that tonight.”
West starter Carson Coffman of the Chicago Rush threw for 136 yards and four touchdowns in the first half. Utah Blaze receiver Mario Urrutia caught six passes for 101 yards, four of those receptions going for touchdowns.
Randy Hippeard of the Tampa Bay Storm threw for 131 yards and four scores in the second half for the East.
AFL China CEO Martin Judge had hoped for a better turnout at the gate for the event, which included a free fanfest and a pregame concert. But the attention of the organizers and the players now turns to the next leg of the tour as the new league, which is a separate entity from the AFL, aims to gain a foothold in China. The league is targeting fall 2014 for its inaugural season.
“The whole thing about this week was the experience,” Carvalho said. “That China game is going to be a little more intense. They’ve never seen American football, so it’s going to be a new thing and I’m really excited to go.”
