Las Vegas’ newest casino, the Downtown Grand, opened on schedule Oct. 27. The former Lady Luck casino has undergone a $100 million makeover to create an entirely new resort, with 650 rooms in two towers, a rooftop pool and several restaurants and bars, including the Art Bar, which features replicas of famous paintings. The official grand opening is set for Nov. 12. A Phase 2 of the building, scheduled for 2015, will include a 100,000-square-foot shopping and meeting center across the street, next to the Mob Museum.
>> Clarke’s Closes: P.J. Clarke’s in the Forum Shops at Caesars Palace has closed. With it goes its great $1 oyster deal. But don’t fret, you can still get a dozen for $10.50 during the Monday-Thursday lunch special at the Big Sur Oyster Bar at South Point.
>> Farm Fixings: Aliante Casino + Hotel has opened Farm 24-7, a new farm-to-table cafe concept using fresh ingredients from local Las Vegas farms. Dishes will be named after local streets. Aliante is on the north side of town.
>> Shania: The first set of 2014 dates have been announced for Shania Twain. “Shania: Still the One” will play at the Colosseum at Caesars Palace Jan. 22-23, 25-26, 28-29 and 31, and Feb. 1, 4-5, 9, 11-12 and 14-15. Tickets start at $55.
QUESTION: There’s a lot of buzz about the new movie “Last Vegas,” but I’ve heard there’s another Las Vegas movie about to hit theaters. Do you have details?
ANSWER: Not one, but two more movies set in Las Vegas are about to be released. While all the hype is being garnered by the all-star cast of “Last Vegas” — Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas and Morgan Freeman — there’s also some star power in “Paradise,” with Russell Brand and Julianne Hough, and “Now You See Me,” (recently released on DVD) with Woody Harrelson and Michael Caine.
