1. Ejected
» Situation: Hawaii 0, Utah State 0, 13:09 remaining, first quarter, Utah State ball, first-and-10 at own 33
» The Play: Utah State QB Darell Garretson completes a pass to WR Travis Reynolds. Reynolds is tackled by S Marrell Jackson with what officials determine is head-to-head contact.
» Impact: By rule Jackson is ejected for targeting an opposing player with a head-to-head hit. The appeal is denied.
» Jackson: "The ref made a decision, so I guess it was an illegal hit. I really can’t say anything about the call. It’s his call. It’s the rule."
2. Bad no-call
» Situation: Utah State 17, Hawaii 3, 13:23 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, third-and-6 at Utah State 30
» The Play: S Brian Suite intercepts Hawaii QB Sean Schroeder’s pass intended for WR Chris Gant, after Gant is knocked to the ground by CB Quinton Byrd. No interference is called.
» Impact: Hawaii was enjoying some rare momentum and field position after Schroeder had hooked up with Gant on a 41-yard strike three plays earlier. This tainted interception ended that. Coach Norm Chow argued with officials vehemently, but to no avail.
» Chow: "Ah, whatever.’"
3. Fake
» Situation: Utah State 17, Hawaii 3, 6:41 remaining, second quarter, Hawaii ball, fourth-and-3 at own 43
» The Play: Up back Marcus Langkilde gets the snap and runs the ball out of punt formation. But he gets just 1 of the 3 yards needed for a first down.
» Impact: Once again Hawaii has brief momentum halted. The Aggies take over and get two more field goals before halftime.
» Chow: "Trying to make something happen. If he ran as hard as he did in practice we might have had a chance."
4. Third-down downer
» Situation: Utah State 26, Hawaii 10, 7:26 remaining, third quarter, Utah State ball, third-and-10 at own 29
» The Play: Garretson finds Reynolds wide open for a 39-yard gain.
» Impact: Two plays later it’s Garretson to Reynolds again, for a 30-yard TD and a 33-10 lead
» Hawaii safety Charles Clay: "It was killing us today. Third down was killing us and we knew it and we were trying to stop it."
5. Back the other way
» Situation: Utah State 33, Hawaii 10, 13:09 remaining, third quarter, Hawaii ball third-and-goal at Utah State 5
» The Play: Hawaii QB Sean Schroeder’s pass is intercepted by LB Kyler Fackrell at the 1 and he returns it 99 yards for a touchdown.
» Impact: Hawaii had just taken over at the Aggies 4 after Tavita Woodard’s interception, but Fackrell’s touchdown put the game away with more than a quarter left.
» Schroeder: "I can’t turn over the ball. We can’t come away empty-handed like that. We can’t have essentially a 14-point swing like that."
