Police are looking for a gunman who seriously wounded a 49-year-old man Monday off a dirt road in Pearl City.
A detective said they are not sure what happened since the victim was incoherent and unable to disclose details of the shooting to police.
Officers were called to a house at 96-123 Waiawa Road in Pearl City at 1:05 p.m. and discovered the man with multiple shots to his body and limbs, police said.
The house is in a remote area near the Pearl Harbor Bike Path and Leeward Community College.
Police found evidence of the shooting some distance away, in front of ABC Used Auto Parts, located along a long dirt road off Lehua Avenue. Its address is 794 Lehua Ave.
"I guess he walked over from the junkyard," said a resident of the Waiawa Road house, who asked not to be named. "It was probably the adrenaline."
The shooting does not appear to have anything to do with the business, a detective said.
The area is overgrown with brush and trees, and no witnesses have been found.
The resident said the man is a friend, and he saw that he was bleeding from a bullet wound to his knee and left arm.
"We sat him in the chair" and called a police officer who happens to rent a portion of the property, he said.
Police questioned the victim as he sat in the chair.
"He was not coherent," the resident said.
Emergency Medical Services paramedics transported the man by ambulance in serious but stable condition to the Queen’s Medical Center.
Honolulu Police Department spokeswoman Michelle Yu said the possible suspect and victim reportedly know each other. Both are known to police.
Police shut down the length of the bike path at both ends to investigate.
Cyclists expressed disappointment at the closure and alarm at the news.
"I ride on this road every day," said one moped rider, who asked what happened.
