Hawaii leads Japan in Asia-Pacific Cup
Team Hawaii won five of the eight points available Monday in the second round of the seventh annual Asia-Pacific Junior Cup at the Waikoloa Beach Resort Kings’ Course on Hawaii island.
The local contingent stormed back after Team Japan won the first three morning matches. Shawn Lu and Kyle Suppa started the rally, downing Futoshi Tokutake and Yuki Shino 2 up, and Team Hawaii took the next four matches, highlighted by dominating wins by Keilyn Ing and Tyler Munetake (5 and 4) and Alanis Sakuma and Spencer Dunaway (6 and 4).
The tournament, presented by the Hawaii State Junior Golf Association, brings together 32 of the best young players — 10 boys and 6 girls on each team — from Hawaii and Japan in a Ryder Cup-style tournament designed to foster good will between 13- to 18-year-old golfers.
Team Hawaii needs 71⁄2 of the 16 available points in today’s singles matches to win the Cup, which concludes today.
