Chun, Ka‘aihue win Pro-Scratch event
Professional Phil Chun got lots of offense from amateur partner Kala Ka‘aihue as the two won Tuesday’s 13th annual Bridgestone Sports Pro-Scratch Championship at Pearl Country Club.
Chun and Ka‘aihue went into the final round in a three-way tie for first. They shot 10-under-par 62 in Monday’s scramble format. Tuesday, they had five birdies and no bogeys, shooting a 67 in the best-ball format and winning by a shot over Garrett Okamura and Royden Heirakuji, who also shot 67.
The winning team had to grind for pars on the final two holes to hold off Okamura and Heirakuji. Ka‘aihue, a professional baseball player, sank 3-foot putts on both holes to clinch the win.
Shane Hoshino and Daron Rilveria (69—131) took third. Two-time champs Lance Taketa and Jonathan Ota (70) tied for fourth with Dave Eichelberger and EJ MacNaughton (67), at 132.
It is Chun’s first win since the 1993 Rainbow Open. He collected $2,000. Ka‘aihue won a $700 gift certificate from Pearl Country Club.
