The opportunity to extend the holiday spirit starts now, as Hawaii Foodbank kicks off its "Check-Out Hunger" program for the 20th year. The campaign to feed the hungry runs through Jan. 15.
Shoppers can tear off coupons while paying for their groceries and donate $2.81 to provide a week of breakfasts for a child, $12.43 to buy a senior lunch for a month or $16.84 for a week of dinners for a family. The amount will be added to the customer’s bill.
Participants include Times and Safeway supermarkets, Don Quijote stores, Tamura markets and liquor stores, Kokua Market Natural Foods Co-op, KTA Super Stores on the Big Island and Big Save stores on Kauai.
Donations go to the Hawaii Foodbank, Maui Food Bank, Hawaii Foodbank on Kauai and The Food Basket on the Big Island.
Kraft Foods kicked off the campaign with a $5,000 donation. The program raised $236,045 last year and nearly $2 million since its start in 1994.
