Rainbow Wahine rock ‘Swords in softball
Kayla Wartner hit two home runs and the University of Hawaii softball team rolled to a 15-2 win over Chaminade in the opening game of the Kamaaina Classic on Friday at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
Freshman pitcher Brittany Hitchcock gave up two unearned runs for the Rainbow Wahine while holding the Silverswords to one hit with five strikeouts over five innings. Sophomore Loie Kesterson threw two innings of scoreless relief.
"I was pretty calm before the game, but once I actually got out there it was a little nerve wracking," Hitchcock said of her RWSS debut. "But my team backed me up and once we started getting runs I was more comfortable out there."
Wartner’s two-run opposite-field homer and Sharla Kleibenstein’s three-run shot to left highlighted UH’s seven-run first inning. Freshman Heather Morales lined a homer to left in the third, and Wartner’s second homer gave UH a 13-2 lead.
In Friday’s second game, Chaminade’s Ashley Phelps delivered a tie-breaking RBI single in the top of the seventh and the Silverswords defeated BYU-Hawaii 4-2.
UH played BYUH in the finale.
In the final game of the night, Morales struck out 11 over six innigns and hit a go-ahead home run in the second inning of UH’s 4-2 win over BYUH. Dori Ann Sugai also homered for UH and Morales retired the last 16 batters she faced.
The tournament continues today with UH facing Chaminade at noon.
The Silverswords face BYUH at 2 p.m. UH and BYUH meet at 4 p.m. to close the exhibition tournament.
No. 4 BYU-Hawaii sweeps Cal Baptist
Shih Ting Chen had 21 kills as No. 4-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii swept California Baptist in a Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball match Friday in Riverside, Calif., 25-19, 25-18, 25-18.
The Seasiders improved to 22-1 overall and 17-1 in the PacWest with their 15th straight win.
» Azusa Pacific swept Hawaii Hilo 25-20, 25-20, 25-22 at Azusa, Calif., to improve to 18-8 overall and 10-6 in the PacWest. The Vulcans fell to 5-13 and 10-13.
» Point Loma defeated Chaminade 25-22, 25-27, 25-16, 25-19 in San Diego to improve to 21-6 overall and 4-3 in the PacWest. The Silverswords are 9-13 and 6-11.
PIAA to host signing event Wednesday
The Pacific Islands Athletic Alliance will host its annual spring National Letter of Intent signing-day event Wednesday at the Elks Club in Waikiki.
High school athletes from the class of 2014 in all sports except football, soccer and men’s water polo who are signing letters of intent and scholarship agreements are encouraged to attend. They must RSVP by Sunday.
Athletes must check in between 6 and 6:15 a.m., with introductions beginning at 6:30 and the signing at 7 a.m. The event is free and open to the public.
