No. 4 BYU-Hawaii clinches PacWest title
Shih Ting Chen had 19 kills and 24 digs as No. 4 Brigham Young-Hawaii beat Point Loma Nazarene 25-15, 25-14, 25-27, 25-23 to win the Pacific West Conference women’s volleyball title on Saturday in San Diego.
The Seasiders (23-1, 18-1) earned the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA Division II tournament. Erh Fang Hsu added 14 kills and three blocks as the Seasiders won their 16th straight match.
» Dixie State defeated Hawaii Pacific 25-13, 22-25, 22-25, 25-19, 15-12 in St. George, Utah, to improve to 16-8 overall and 13-5 in the PacWest. Haley Doerfler and Elizabeth Culpepper had 11 kills each for HPU (16-9, 10-7).
» California Baptist swept Hawaii Hilo 25-23, 25-18, 25-11 in Riverside, Calif., to improve to 17-9 overall and 14-4 in the PacWest. Marley Strand-Nicolaisen had 15 kills for Hawaii Hilo (10-13, 5-13).
» Azusa Pacific defeated Chaminade 25-14, 25-17, 25-18 in Azusa, Calif., to improve to 19-8 overall and 11-6 in the PacWest. Kim Spring had nine kills for the Silverswords (9-14, 6-12).
Seasiders women win eighth straight
Makelle Yates scored in the 59th minute to help the Brigham Young-Hawaii women’s soccer team beat host UH Hilo 1-0 in a Pacific West conference match on Saturday. The Seasiders (9-4-2, 8-3-1) have won their last eight. The Vulcans fall to 10-4-2 overall and 7-4-1 in league play.
» The BYU-Hawaii men’s soccer team beat host UH Hilo 2-1 in a Pacific West conference match. Jonathan Larsen and David Urbina scored for the Seasiders (9-3-4, 7-2-3). Darwin Ortiz scored for Hilo (6-8-1, 4-7-1).
Santillan leads HPU at regional meet
Leandro Santillan finished 36th to lead the Hawaii Pacific men’s cross country team at Saturday’s NCAA Division II West Region meet in Spokane, Wash.
Santillan finished the 10,000-meter race in 33:05.5 as HPU finished 11th in the team standings with 272 points. Isaac Chavez won the race in 30:55.9 to help Chico State win the team title with 33 points. BYUH placed 14th with 376 points.
In the women’s race, HPU finished 13th with 328 points. Fiona McKenna was the team’s top finisher, placing 39th with a time of 23:06.6. Susan Tanui won the race in 21:45.4 to help Alaska Anchorage win the team title with 76 points. BYUH was 21st with 567 points.
Western Oregon defeats Hawaii Hilo
Adam Hastings scored 17 points to lead the Western Oregon men’s basketball team to a 76-72 win over Hawaii Hilo in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge on Saturday at McCabe Gym.
Rodney Webster had 14 points for Western Oregon (1-1). Derek Owens scored 15 points and Jamario Clayton had 14 points for Hilo (1-1).
