USPS says yes to Sunday delivery
Just in time for Christmas — and in the nick of time for the ailing U.S. Postal Service.
The USPS finally seems to be taking an important page from the private-sector playbook in its new deal with Amazon to provide Sunday package delivery.
Sunday delivery just started in New York and Los Angeles, and next year, will extend to "a large portion of the U.S. population," Amazon promises.
No doubt that for Amazon customers, weekend delivery is a welcome prospect, allowing buyers to get their hot little hands on that latest mail-order purchase sooner rather than later.
As for the financially hobbled USPS — it lost $16 billion last year and expects to lose $6 billion this year — it’s just good to see the federal agency thinking creatively to drum up business. For that, our stamp of approval.
Making marathon more secure
More video cameras are likely to track the action at the Honolulu Marathon, as the city seeks to add 12 new sets of traffic cameras to the 38 already posted along the route of the Dec. 8 race.
It’s a necessary and prudent step in the wake of the fatal bombings that rocked last April’s Boston Marathon.
The cameras are part of an enhanced security plan by marathon officials that includes putting emergency management employees and police officers on duty during the race.
Equally reassuring is the city’s statement that the enhanced scrutiny won’t be permanent: Nine of the 12 new traffic cameras would be removed after the last runner crosses the finish line safely.
