Join surfer Hamilton for sandal preview
Meet pro surfer and Kauai native Bethany Hamilton on Monday from 5 to 6 p.m. for the Hawaii debut of the Bethany Hamilton limited-edition signature sandal by Cobian at Island Sole’s Ala Moana store.
Hamilton will meet fans, autograph posters and share a preview of the sandal. Fans will also have a chance to pre-order the limited-edition footwear.
A portion of proceeds from sales of the sandal will benefit Friends of Bethany, a nonprofit organization supporting shark attack survivors and traumatic amputees.
Any purchase of a Cobian product, including pre-orders, during the event will include a free DVD of "Heart of a Soul Surfer: The Bethany Hamilton Story."
TOMS Marketplace includes local firm
The Base Project, founded by Hawaii entrepreneur Chris Akin and his brother, Doug, is among 30 enterprises that have been chosen for a collaboration with TOMS Shoes for the launch of TOMS Marketplace, an online retail destination hosted on toms.com.
The marketplace features 200 products from companies chosen for their social consciousness, spanning a wide range of causes and geographic areas of impact.
The Akins founded The Base Project to support artisans in the developing world, helping them market their wares globally and returning a portion of profits to their communities.
The marketplace offers the company’s upcycled PVC bracelets that are hand-carved in Namibia. A portion of proceeds goes toward providing tribal communities with clean water, clothing, school fees and textbooks for children, and other needs.
Akin said he got to know members of the TOMS team while developing The Base Project.
"They really championed our products and brand," he said. "Fast-forward to this summer when I received a call from TOMS about a top-secret, game-changing new venture."
The TOMS Marketplace highlights early-stage companies and their causes.
"The TOMS team spent months vetting our philanthropic efforts, materials sourcing, fair trade practices, growth of the company, pricing, production lead times, brand messaging, etc.," Akin said.
