University of Hawaii athletic director Ben Jay left a hospital Tuesday night after a one-night stay, the result of being injured while trying to break up a fight following Sunday’s women’s basketball game, school officials said.
Jay said he was admitted to Straub Clinic and Hospital on Monday night with what were described as "severe" back pains suffered in the melee after the final game of the Bank of Hawaii Rainbow Wahine Classic at the Stan Sheriff Center.
UH lost to West Virginia, 59-56.
Jay said he underwent a CT scan that showed "transverse (vertebrae) fractures" and "some blood around my kidneys."
No charges have been filed resulting from the incident, UH said, and officials said they were not aware of a police report being made.
Both UH and West Virginia say they are investigating the incident and trying to identify people involved.
Jay said he became aware of the disturbance during the postgame awards ceremony and tried to break it up. As a result, he said, "I guess I took a little shot. I got hit from behind in the whole skirmish. I was trying to hold back a West Virginia fan and something hit me from behind."
A UH spokesman said video footage included shots of Jay being pushed backward.
Jay received medical attention on the court at the Stan Sheriff Center, where he said he experienced "back spasms" but left under his own power.
UH said Jay will continue to consult with department officials and work via laptop. He will not accompany the football team to Wyoming for its game Saturday in Laramie.
