UH frosh sets record in 500-meter free

Hawaii freshman Victor Goicoechea swam a school record 4:20.83 in the 500-meter freestyle and the Warriors won two relay events Thursday to lead after the first day of the UC San Diego swim meet in Monterey, Calif.

Makawao’s Sam Cyr fired a third-round 70 to pull into the top 30 at the Web.com Second Stage tournament Thursday in Murrieta, Calif. The top 20 and ties move to next month’s Final Stage and earn status on the 2014 Web.com Tour.
