Rainbow Warriors swimmers take title
The University of Hawaii men’s swimming team won the team title at the Arena Invitational that ended Saturday in Monterey Park, Calif. UH scored 1,649 points at the three-day meet. The women’s team placed third with 728.5 points.
The UH men won five events on the final day. Ali Maclean won the men’s 200-yard backstroke in 1 minute, 44.94 seconds, Yuri Samouilich won the 100 free in 44.23 seconds, Victor Goicoechea won the 1,650 free in 15:15.14 and Eduardo Guimaraes won the 200 fly in 1:47.49. The team of Maclean, Samouilich, Karl-Richard Hennebach and Ryan Makuta won the 400 freestyle relay in 2:56.97. Jasmine Alkhaldi placed third in the women’s 100 free with a time of 49.44.
» UH’s Amund Gismervick won the men’s 10-meter platform on Saturday at the Texas Diving Invitational in Austin. Gismervick’s score of 444.75 is a school record. UH’s Lauren Hall placed seventh in the women’s platform with a score of 235.60 and teammate Aimee Harrison was 10th at 222.30.
Team USA men’s volleyball falls to Iran
Team USA could not convert a match point in the fourth set and eventually fell to Iran in five Saturday in the FIVB World Grand Champions Cup at Tokyo Metropolitan Gymnasium.
A day after winning a five-set match against Italy, the U.S. lost an emotional match to Iran 28-26, 19-25, 19-25, 27-25, 18-16. It was Iran’s first win over the U.S.
Kalaheo’s Futi Tavana scored 14 points, on 11 kills and three blocks in the middle, and libero Erik Shoji, from Honolulu, had 19 digs. Micah Christenson, also from Honolulu, again started at setter and Kawika Shoji was a serving substitute.
The Americans (1-2) finish today against Russia.
HPU, BYUH fall in GNAC Challenge
Mark McLaughlin scored 30 points and Kevin Davis added 17 to help the Central Washington men’s basketball team beat Brigham Young-Hawaii 100-93 in the PacWest/GNAC Challenge in Ellensburg, Wash., on Saturday.
Jordan Ngatai and Scott Friel scored 18 points each, Robbie Mitchell managed 15 and DeAndre Medlock added 14 for the Seasiders (1-3). Central Washington (2-2) outscored BYUH 16-9 in overtime.
