DALLAS » Chanel designer Karl Lagerfeld is bringing his "Metiers d’Art" show to Dallas next month.
The collection showcasing the work of artisans, such as embroiders, will be held Dec. 10 at Fair Park, the city’s historic exhibition venue.
Before the show, a film written and directed by Lagerfeld about the couture house’s creator, Coco Chanel, will premiere. "The Return" stars Geraldine Chaplin and Rupert Everett. The film also will be shown on Chanel’s website when it premieres in Dallas.
Since 2002, Lagerfeld has developed a "Metiers d’Art" collection to show each year in December. The show has previously been held in places such as Tokyo, London, Shanghai and Edinburgh.
Hotels sampling lighted carpets
AMSTERDAM » Ever wish your hotel room could be marked "Do Not Disturb" in glowing lights, to drive the message home? That option is on its way.
Two European companies have developed a system in which colored LEDs are combined with specialized carpets to make tailored hotel signs that appear underfoot instead of on walls.
Obvious uses include having glowing red arrows direct guests to the nearest escape or exit in case of emergency. Or displaying guests’ names outside their doors.
Ed Huibers, sales director at Royal Philips NV, the world’s biggest lighting maker, says hotel tests are underway.
Europe’s biggest carpet maker, Desso, said Monday a broader market rollout will begin next year, with airports also potential customers.
Zoo will glow during holidays
ROYAL OAK, Mich. » The Detroit Zoo is planning a light display for the upcoming holiday season.
The zoo in Royal Oak will use 2 million LED lights to illuminate buildings, animal sculptures and trees. Called "Wild Lights," it will be situated along a half-mile trail and feature entertainment and activities for kids of all ages, including a short musical, a musical light show, cookie decorating, storytelling, ice-carving demonstrations and a Lego city and train display.
"Wild Lights" will be held for 24 nights between Saturday and Jan. 5. Admission is $8 per person in advance and $10 at the gate for ages 2 and up. Parking is $5 per car.
