Smyth and Babkina win XTERRA titles
Two runners won their first XTERRA Trail Run World Championships on Sunday at Kualoa Ranch.
Patrick Smyth of Salt Lake City won the overall title with a 21-kilometer off-road course time of 1 hour, 16 minutes, 38 seconds. He won the event in his first appearance, coming two months after winning the national championship in Utah.
Rounding out the top three in the men’s division were Joseph Gray (Lakewood, Wash.) in 1:17:26 and Max King (Bend, Ore.) in 1:20:53.
The female winner was Russian-born Polina Babkina, who has lived in Hawaii the past few years while attending Hawaii Pacific University. Her time was 1:37:24. Lucy Smith (Sidney, British Columbia) was second with a time of 1:37:55 and Meggan Franks (Athabasca, Alberta) took third in 1:40:24.
