Kan is SEC’s top freshman
Missouri outside hitter Carly Kan was named the SEC freshman of the year on Monday. Kan, a 2013 Punahou alumna, hit .360, which led all left-side hitters in the conference. She was also the only player in SEC play to average at least three kills and three digs per set.
“When I came to Mizzou in the fall, I was just hoping I would see time on the floor, so to earn this award means a lot,” Kan said in a press release.
Overall, Kan started all 34 matches and finished with 351 kills (3.19 per set) and 298 digs (2.71 per set), ranking second on the team in both categories.
She also had 50 assists and 34 aces with 40 block assists.
Missouri finished the regular season a perfect 34-0 and will host the first two rounds of the NCAA tournament as the No. 4 overall seed.
Hardin, Haina are All-Big West
Former ‘Iolani teammates Chelsea Hardin and Mahina Haina were honored by the Big West Conference on Monday.
Hardin, a 6-foot senior outside hitter at Cal Poly, was the only Mustang named to the All-Big West first team.
Hardin averaged 2.94 kills per set while hitting .239 in 23 matches. She established a career high with 19 kills against Louisiana-Monroe this season and hit .647 in a match against Central Connecticut State with 13 kills in 17 swings.
Hardin also tallied 28 blocks, 36 digs and six assists.
Haina, who graduated from high school in 2010 — one year after Hardin — finished third for Cal State Northridge with 205 kills (2.75 per set). She’s sixth all-time at the school with 1,165 career kills and is fourth with 3,312 attempts.
Cal State Northridge shared the Big West championship with UC Santa Barbara and Hawaii and will play in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Thursday against Colorado State at the Galen Center in Los Angeles.
It’s the first tourney appearance for the Matadors since 2004.
