Anna Jang, the 2007 Hawaii high school champion, fired an even-par 72 Wednesday in the opening round of the final LPGA Qualifying Tournament.
Jang, a Punahou and Princeton graduate, is tied for 48th. The top 20 players after Sunday’s fifth round earn exempt LPGA Tour cards. Those who finish 21st-45th earn non-exempt status. All those who make the 72-hole cut (low 70 and ties) get Symetra Tour status in 2014.
Kalani and James Madison graduate Nicole Sakamoto shot 74, as did former Rainbow Wahine Corie Hou from Australia. They have a share of 88th in the 153-player field at LPGA International in Daytona Beach, Fla. Sakamoto has won seven of the past 10 Hawaii women’s majors she has played.
There are golfers from 30 states and 27 countries trying to qualify. Seven Americans are in the top 10, including Jaye Marie Green. The 19-year-old shot a course-record 62 and leads by four.
Anderson, Jakovac win
Kellan Anderson sank a 6-foot birdie putt on the third playoff hole to win the 2013 EZ-GO Facility Team Championship with Jason Jakovac on Monday at Hualalai.
The champions, from Hoakalei Country Club, led after a 65 in the first round’s best-ball format. They finished at 12-under-par 132, firing 67 Monday.
Darren Sayre (The Club at Hokuli‘a) and Garrett Okamura (Dunes at Maui Lani) came in with a 65 to catch the leaders. Moments later, Nanea’s Kris Kitt and Juan Rodriguez shot 64 to make it a three-way tie. The winning team shared $2,400. The other two in the playoff shared $1,400 apiece.
