Worker struck by truck at shipping pier
A female security officer in her 40s was taken to the hospital in serious but stable condition Monday after she was hit by a truck at the Young Brothers facility at Pier 39.
Young Brothers officials confirmed that the victim was struck by a commercial trucking company vehicle at the Nimitz security gate to the harbor while she was working as a contracted security officer for Young Brothers.
"Emergency responders arrived quickly to the site to aid the injured worker," President Glenn Hong said in a statement. "Our thoughts and prayers are with her for a full and speedy recovery … We take the safety of our operations very seriously, and we are cooperating with the Honolulu Police Department to ensure it has all information that may be helpful in relation to this accident."
Police said the incident happened about 9:30 a.m.
Homeless man’s body found in ditch
Maui police have classified the discovery of a body found in a canal ditch in Kahului as an unattended death.
The body of the homeless man in a ditch near 239 Hoohana St. was reported to police at 6:55 a.m. Monday.
The man, 51, apparently fell into the ditch and died, police said. Maui Police spokesman Lt. William Juan said there were no outward signs of recent injury, but an autopsy will be conducted.
Police are attempting to contact the man’s relatives.
Woman pinned against wall by vehicle
A 63-year-old Kapaa, Kauai, woman was injured Monday afternoon when she was struck by an out-of-control vehicle while sitting outside a Longs Drugs store.
According to police, a 23-year-old employee of the store was attempting to park the vehicle when she struck the curb and mistakenly hit the gas pedal. The vehicle jumped the curb, hit two wooden support beams, then struck a wooden bench on which the victim was sitting. The victim was pinned between the vehicle and a wall until the driver reversed the car.
The victim was transported to Wilcox Memorial Hospital with apparent non-life-threatening injuries. The driver was also taken to the hospital for toxicology testing.
Park bathrooms will be closed
The Maui Department of Parks and Recreation says the H.W. Rice Memorial Park restroom will be closed next week for construction of a new septic system
The park will remain open during the construction, Monday to Dec. 20.
