BYU-Hawaii to national quarterfinals
Riding the momentum of a 20-match winning streak and a successful defense of its West Regional title, fourth-ranked Brigham Young-Hawaii headed to Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and the NCAA Division II women’s volleyball championship.
The Seasiders (27-1) face Ferris State (25-8), the Midwest Regional winner, in Thursday’s quarterfinal (10:30 a.m. Hawaii time). Both Brigham Young-Hawaii and Ferris State were seeded second in their respective regional tournaments and both defeated the top seed in five sets Saturday to advance to the elite eight.
Also advancing are West Texas A&M (33-3), Tampa (31-1), Wheeling Jesuit (36-5), Wingate (31-2), LIU-Post (24-9) and six-time defending national champion Concordia-St. Paul (31-3).
Last season, the Seasiders advanced to the national semifinals before losing to eventual champion Concordia-St. Paul in four sets.
Brigham Young-Hawaii had four players named to the regional all-tournament team in junior hitter Shih Ting “Stella” Chen, junior setter Ying Chun “Michelle” Chen, junior middle Erh Fang “Ariel” Hsu and freshman hitter Noel Pauga.

Chan helps Azusa Pacific to national title
Sacred Hearts product Logan Chan made a key defensive play in overtime to help Azusa Pacific win the NCCAA women’s soccer national title 2-1 over Dallas Baptist on Saturday in Kissimmee, Fla.
Chan, a junior defender, blocked a shot on the left side of the box by Jake Cox in the opening minutes of overtime. She was shoring up a defensive back line that was missing senior Natalie Nick and “Logan stepped up big with Nick out,” APU coach Jason Surrell said.
Sophomore forward Mayra Almazan scored the match-winner in the fourth minute of overtime to give the Cougars their first National Christian College Athletics Association soccer championship. They also won the NAIA title in 1998.
Azusa Pacific, a provisional PacWest member, moves to full NCAA II and PacWest status next school year.
