Suspect charged with murdering man, 83
An 18-year-old Kapalama man was charged Thursday with murdering an 83-year-old homeless man in Chinatown last week.
R.J. Marsolo was charged with second-degree murder and third-degree assault. His bail was set at $500,000.
Mamerto "Eddie" Semana died Dec. 5. He was found unconscious in Chinatown a day earlier. The Medical Examiner’s Office said he died from blunt force injuries to his head.
Intruder hits apartment resident on head
Police are seeking the public’s help in finding a man in his 20s who broke into a Kapiolani apartment Thursday morning, hit a woman and then fled with her wallet.
Police said the break-in at a Laau Street apartment occurred at 1 a.m.
The victim was awakened by the male intruder standing over her bed in her apartment. She attempted to scream for help and was struck on the head. The suspect took her wallet and fled in an unknown direction.
The suspect is described as being 5 feet 6 inches to 5 feet 10 inches tall with short black hair.

Plunge off cliff kills man, 59
A 59-year-old man died Thursday after falling off a 15- to 20-foot cliff in Kipahulu, Maui.
Hana firefighters, a fire rescue crew and a fire helicopter were sent to Kipahulu at mile marker 41 on Hana Highway. Crews found the man had fallen onto the rocks along the surf break, officials reported.
The fire helicopter and rescue personnel airlifted the victim’s body to the top of the cliff. Police personnel transported him by vehicle to the Hana Health Center.
Injured hiker helped off trail
A Kauai fire helicopter and emergency personnel rescued a 35-year-old Wailua woman who was injured Wednesday while hiking the Kalalau Trail.
The Kauai Fire Department said the woman injured her knee.
Air 1 and Rescue 3 responded at about 5:10 p.m. and airlifted the hiker to Waimea Canyon Park. She was then transported to Kauai Veterans Memorial Hospital. The woman was treated and released Wednesday.
Man charged over false report
Hawaii County police charged a 25-year-old Kalapana man Thursday with making a false report of a gun threat Monday at the University of Hawaii-Hilo campus.
Police arrested Louis H. Bartlow on Thursday and charged him with false reporting to law enforcement authorities, a misdemeanor punishable by up to one year in jail. His bail was set at $500, and he is scheduled to make his initial appearance in court today.
